Moving with Children

Moving house is one of the most stressful things we go through in life (it’s in divorce level stress territory) and the stress of moving house can be multiplied when moving home with children. The need for moving home with your children varies massively too, often moving with your children is an incredibly happy event – moving to a bigger family home, which has been designed to accommodate you and your brood. There are also many cases, when single parents are forced to move homes with their children, because of the breakdown of their relationship.

Whatever the reason for moving, we have put together some tips on our experiences of moving families with children, sharing some of the strategies parents used to make moving day, go that little bit easier.

Tell the kids about the move in good time

Kids respond better to change when they are told about big changes, in good time. Talk positively about the move, and how it will benefit all of you. Tell them about the new area they will be moving to, local parks they can play in – or how the new house is better than the old one!

Spend some time planning their new bedroom

As part of keeping your child happy with the move, talk about their new bedroom and how they can plan the layout and decoration of their new bedroom. It’s always great to take them on a couple of viewings too, so they can visualise the move for themselves.

Don’t be scared to have a clearout

Kids accrue a hell of a lot of toys and ‘stuff’ over the years. Instead of transporting ALL of it to the new house – try to use the house move as an opportunity for a clearout. Old toys and clothes are all fair game! Charity shops are always crying out for kids toys and clothes, and a younger child could certainly put them all to good use.

Keep them fed

Although a house move can cause a lot of disruption, it’s important to remember the important things – like keeping your kids well fed. After all, there’s nothing worse than a hungry child! Pack snacks & pack lunches for move day, to make sure they remain content and hopefully.. Quiet.

Can anyone else look after them for the day?

If you have trusted family or friends to look after the kids on move day, then that can be a massive help. They can return once the bulk of the work is complete, and they have a bedroom!
